One Side Tries New Strategy in Debate over Abortion
A battle in S. Dakota showed the public is tired of polarized politics, an abortion-rights leader says.
Sarah Stoesz was standing in line at a car rental counter in Sioux Falls, S.D., when she felt the tectonic plates of abortion politics shift beneath her feet.
People around her were talking about abortion -- with strangers, in public. More shocking, they were embarrassed by the broad abortion ban their legislature had just passed. It made no exceptions for incest, rape or the health of the mother. "What kind of state are we from?'' one asked.
That was the moment when Stoesz, chief executive officer of Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, saw an opening in a fight long defined by those who see it as black and white.
What she heard that spring day in 2006 were the outraged voices of everyone else in the vast middle -- people who saw it as gray.

Rapid City Journal says vote NO!
By the Journal Editorial Board
Abortion Should Remain a Family Decision
No other issue in South Dakota this year has generated the same level of
emotion and attention as Initiated Measure 11 — the measure to ban abortions in
South Dakota with a few exceptions.
In 2006, the state’s voters rejected a similar measure, although one that contained no exceptions under any circumstances. That all encompassing ban has led to the 2008 version the state will vote on early next week.
We do not support Initiated Measure 11, and recommend a no vote.
Clearly the measure would be challenged and would likely make its way
to the Supreme Court. Remember, in 2006 the legal challenge and subsequent path
to the Supreme Court to challenge Roe v. Wade, was the intent of abortion ban
authors.
South Dakota should not be put in this position to run point on this
issue and then be forced to manage the legal costs for many years to come. The
state will be spending money fighting a battle it should not be involved with in
the first place.
What would a legal challenge cost the state of South Dakota? How many
millions of dollars should state taxpayers be asked to invest in a challenge to
a federal law rather than spending the same money on education, the highway
system or many of the other state needs?
Some in the medical community have concerns about the measure, pointing
out the standards imposed on the medical community could effect the doctor’s
treatment of a patient. The government and attorneys should not be making
decisions best left to a doctor and his or her patient.

Aberdeen American News Urges a NO vote on IM 11!
2008-10-26
Initiated Measure 11 would prohibit abortions in South Dakota except in cases where the mother's life or health is at a substantial and irreversible risk, and in cases of reported rape and incest.
The American News is recommending a no vote on Measure 11.
Regardless of the reworked allowables presented in this measure (rape, incest, mother's health/life), we believe that Measure 11, at its base level, still intrudes where it shouldn't: government intervention in a supremely personal decision. Such an intensely intimate decision whether to undergo such a procedure belongs to the woman, her husband/partner, her family, her physician and her faith minister.
This is one place (among others) where government has no business interfering. We believe that many of the arguments for - and against - Measure 11 are saturated with political agendas that have no merit and do very little to provide tangible guidance for a woman who might be contemplating such a procedure.
In the United States there has been more written about the issue of abortion - any type or nuance - than almost any other subject in the past 25 years. Other than war it might be the most highly charged and divisive debate that occurs in America.
