StandUP for Nancy Turbak Berry. She StandsUP for the Women of South Dakota

What happened over the weekend to one of South Dakota’s fine senators is a real shame… to put it mildly.

In case you’ve missed the stories, Sen. Nancy Turbak Berry of Watertown was set to give the commencement address at Presentation College in Aberdeen on Saturday. But, on Friday (just one day before the event) the College disinvited her because she is pro-choice and it is a Catholic university.

When politicians are elected, they are elected to represent the people of their community, not a specific religious group. Just look at what is happening in Kansas to Governor Kathleen Sebelius. The Archbishop has asked her to not-receive communion because of her stance on abortion. This is proof of the need for broader dialogue on these issues. More intolerance is going to continue to get us no where.

Ms. Turbak Berry is a hard-working, compassionate senator for the people of this state. She is a strong advocate for women and believes in working toward sensible solutions to reduce unintended pregnancy. She worked very hard during the 2008 legislative session to support the Birth Control Protection Act (which failed) to ensure that women have access to birth control and prevent the need for abortion.

Unfortunately, the fact that she is such an advocate for women’s healthcare is being ignored because she was forced into the spotlight on her position that abortion needs to be safe and legal. Like so many of us, Senator Turbak Berry understands that making abortion illegal only makes it dangerous.

I’m outraged that the college is allowing this single issue to overshadow all of the great work that Nancy has done to help the people in Watertown and across South Dakota.
